For Asia Now, HdM Gallery has to decided to present a curated project around figurative Chinese artists with works by Xie Lei, Fan Jing, Zhang Shujian and Lu Chao. Whilst figuration is not traditionally a Chinese discipline, its importance within the contemporary scene has grown in recent years, making a snapshot indispensable to understand recent developments.

Each artist has a different approach to figuration. Zhang Shujian attempts to combine Chinese and Western aesthetics in a very detailed and painterly manner. Xie Lei is heavily influenced by the cannons of Western contemporary art whilst Fan Jing tries to disseminate a modernist element in her paintings.
