For its first participation in Asia Now, the Galerie Françoise Livinec reflects its longstanding openness to East-Asian contemporary art with a booth presenting four of our iconic Chinese and Korean artists.

Inspired by the heritage building of the Monnaie de Paris, the booth pays homage to the virtuosity of the human hand that transforms raw material and turns it into precious objects.

A central display presents artworks by the ceramic master Bai Ming, creating a dialogue between the French Institution that hosts us and the Chinese Jingdezhen ovens, another center of high craftsmanship. This series of porcelain pieces, exhibited for the first time in France will introduce Bai Ming’s most recent creative chapter, a new step forward after his previous exhibition at Cernuschi Museum in 2014.

Surrounding the viewer, large paintings by three Korean artists expresses their singular way to transform matter. The multiple layers of Jang Kwang Bum’s paintings are revealed by meticulous sanding, creating undulations similar to water surface. A comparable process of layering and scratching opens to a whole different world under the hands of Kim Tae-Ho. The resulting visual grids are both a reminiscence of ancient engravings or high technology patterns. A brutal force is expressed in Hur Kyung Aei’s paintings made of teared off or crushed painting straps, reinforced by a powerful chromatic palette.
