Tingwei Li is a Chinese born artist based in Berlin, having recently worked in Beijing. She arranges information associated with objects of all kinds and engages in interdisciplinary based research. Her current works are collaged installations created as sensors for transmitting the perception of unspoken and indescribable feelings. Visual elements, sounds, videos and readymade objects unite the identity of self with intangible phenomenon, reflecting the emotional dissonance in the information era. Working through ideas of the body, specifically our pursuit of a “healthier” mental and physical condition, she is currently researching the way communities address contemporary health issues.

Acting Praying

In post-modern art performance, there is a tendency to present the Christian antibody as a subversive force, yet deeply connected to the object it subverts, blurring the line between "negative" and "positive." This exploration goes beyond physical manifestations such as bodily markings, sacred features, wounds, corpses, slaughter, sacrifice, redemptive sacrifice, the sacredness of bloodshed, and the destruction of the flesh. It delves into the impulse to confront one's own mortality, the Dionysian spirit of improvisation, and the perspective of a scientist who denies the existence of God.

Through the manipulation and transformation of Stephen Hawking's discourse (from “Brief Answers to the Big Questions”), the artist gives voice to a strong scientific persuasion, infusing it into the body, breath, and space. This immersive experience inspires the audience to imagine a universe brimming with chaotic energy, while simultaneously highlighting the serene impulse towards life.

Tingwei Li employs language and sound as catalysts, fermenting an interactive and meditative environment reminiscent of a soothing chicken soup, infused with oriental elements. This inclusive hybrid space is designed to captivate theatergoers, drawing them into its field. The event extends an invitation to the public, urging them to partake in a daily ritual that occurs regularly. By using their physical presence, participants are encouraged to explore their own moments of prayer and wishes within the intervals marked by numbers. This artistic performance combines elements of history, religion, philosophy, and scientific inquiry to provoke contemplation and engage audiences in a unique and introspective experience.
