Aziza Shadenova

Aziza Shadenova’s installation uses the traditional silky ikat textile to raise awareness of the role of history and geology in Central Asian identity. Originally conceived as props for a film about the shrinking Aral Sea, these eyes act as talismanic warnings about man-made ecological disasters, like the one perpetrated by the Soviets in over-producing cotton or “white gold”.
