What unifies the very different pieces of art chosen for Asia NOW is the interwovenness of personal narrative with cultural history and the reinvention of ancient craftmanship translated by the four distinct artists into different materials across the media of their choice. Ramazan Can uses fabrics from his own family´s textile archive and combines them with a material symbolic of modern urbanism, concrete. In the series "Altbau", Ekin Su Koc re-contextualizes textiles from her ancestor´s dowry. With a strong research-based practice, Tugce Diri transforms photographs taken of the vast mountains of waste surrounding Istanbul into delicate stitching and abstract drawings. Queerness, masculinity and cultural heritage, are themes Sarp Kerem Yavuz touches upon in the series Masallah, a projection of different patterns found on traditional Ottoman tiles onto naked bodies. Hanefi Yeter´s amphores complete the selection of artworks reminding us of past history and humanity`s continuously evolving relationship with nature.
