Almagul Menlibayeva
Almagul Menlibayeva is well known for her works on women in Central Asian society. Born in Kazakhstan, she combines her education in the avant-garde school of Futurism with nomadic post-Soviet aesthetics. A first window displays a photograph combining fabrics and architectural elements of Timurid architecture inspired by the works of Astronomer Ulugh Beg (1394-1449) from Samarkand. In another photograph from the series Thermonuclear Skin, the artist looks at the Tokamak of Kurchatov in North Kazakhstan, a fusion reactor located on a former Soviet nuclear test, to question human vulnerability to nuclear waste and future risks.
