MadeIn Gallery presents a video work by the artist Shen Xin that explore queerness and queer aethetics.
In ‘The Gay Critic’, film recordings of homoerotic friendships within the working class in China are edited together with scenes from a trip of the artist with friends to Portugal, focusing on but not limited to the queer protagonists, and making associations with violent and sexual imagery that reference animals and colonial symbols. In the background, excerpts from ‘The Temple of the Golden Pavilion’ by right-wing queer protagonist Yukio Mishima are sung by a computerized vocaloid character named “Oliver”.
