MARTIN GOYA BUSINESS

>> Cheng Ran

Martin Goya Business, founded by the artist Cheng Ran (winner of the inaugural Nomura Emerging Artist Award) , is a new platform for artistic experimentations in Hangzhou. Unlike a commercial gallery or an art museum, it intends to function as an alternative space to fill the gap between a conventional gallery and a non-profit organisation. Martin Goya Business is committed to encouraging and supporting local young artists and their new approaches, experiments or researches. The aim is to create diverse artistic practices, to set and develop the agendas of artist-led platforms, and to propose a new kind of relationship between art and commerce. As a result, it refuses to be dominated by excessive commercialisation and meaningless trendsetting.

Cheng Ran (winner of the inaugural Nomura Emerging Artist Award) exhibits his own video work along with a hand-picked selection of young artists from China: ChillChill & Alex Wang, You A’da, Wenxin Zhang, PAPAPEPIA.

Cheng Ran was born in 1981 in Inner Mongolia and now lives and works in Hangzhou, China, makes film and video work rooted in many forms of storytelling, including literature, poetry, and cinema from both Western and Chinese canons. In 2017 he had his first major museum solo show outside of China with his exhibition “Diary of a Madman” at the New Museum in New York.
