Yu Araki

Yu Araki (b.1985, Japan) is a video artist and filmmaker whose work deals with the relationship between the camera and notions of the self. With a background in sculpture and new media, Araki approaches each new project with a careful consideration for both site and medium specificity, often allowing conditions for making to be dictated by the working environment and available materials. Recently, he has been inserting himself into various locations of the world in a form of cultural espionage, to further develop his work while examining how different cultural, socio-political, and geographical contexts inform his resulting works.

Araki’s work has been shown at international institutions, including Tate Modern (UK), ZKM (Germany), A*DESK (Spain), Para/Site Art Space (Hong Kong), Tokyo Wonder Site (Japan) and film festivals in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, and the US.
